At the heart of our backyard farm are our beloved chickens. John and Tracie Montville take great pride in raising a happy and healthy flock, ensuring they live in a safe and nurturing environment.
Meet Our Flock
We currently have 12 chickens in total, comprising 6 adult hens and 6 adorable baby chicks. Each chicken is an important member of our farm, contributing to our daily supply of fresh, organic eggs.
Daily Routine
Every morning, our chickens are let out into a spacious, fenced-in area where they can roam freely, scratch the ground, and enjoy the fresh air. This outdoor space is designed to provide them with plenty of room to explore and engage in natural behaviors.
Safety Measures
Ensuring the safety of our chickens is a top priority. To protect them from predators like hawks, we have covered their outdoor area with a bird net. This netting provides a secure environment where our chickens can enjoy their time outside without the threat of aerial predators.
Additionally, we have taken steps to raccoon-proof the coop. Raccoons are known for their cleverness and determination, so we’ve reinforced the coop with sturdy materials and secure locks to keep our chickens safe during the night.
The Coop
Our chicken coop is more than just a shelter; it’s a cozy home designed with our chickens’ comfort in mind. The coop is equipped with:
- Nesting Boxes: Comfortable nesting boxes where our hens can lay their eggs in peace.
- Perches: Plenty of perches for roosting, allowing our chickens to rest comfortably.
- Ventilation: Proper ventilation to ensure fresh air circulates, keeping the coop environment healthy.
- Cleanliness: Regular cleaning and maintenance to provide a hygienic living space.
Benefits of Raising Chickens
Raising chickens has been a rewarding experience for us. Not only do they provide us with fresh, nutritious eggs, but they also contribute to our garden by helping with pest control and providing rich compost material.
